Ethics by Polling
A mistaken impression among many is that the morality of an act is somehow affected by prevailing opinions or the findings of polls. The views of majorities can lead to changes in laws in democratic governments, but it is equally true that merely because something is legal does not mean it is necessarily ethical. Radio and Podcasts
Are Near-Death Experiences (NDEs) Supernatural Phenomena?
LA Catholic Morning on Archangel Radio
Father Tad, Todd and Ellen look at some of the common elements reported in near-death experiences and the semi-religious overtones that often accompany such reports. NDEs are not instances of a person actually dying and then returning from the dead to tell about it, but could they somehow be providing a glimpse beyond death, or just a manifestation of the way we process the world around us through our brains? Researchers who have studied NDEs extensively note how other situations resemble NDEs, such as fainting, hallucinations, and psychedelic drug use. As a general rule, we ought to prefer a natural explanation for a phenomenon, unless and until the evidence for a supernatural explanation becomes truly compelling or overwhelming. The Mission of The National Catholic Bioethics Center is to provide education, guidance, and resources to the Church and society to uphold the dignity of the human person in health care and biomedical research, thereby sharing in the ministry of Jesus Christ and his Church.
NCBC education, guidance, and resources measurably help bishops and Catholic health care ministries to strengthen the integrity and witness of the Church’s healing ministry;
Catholics and all people of good will effectively draw on the light and life of Jesus Christ and the Catholic moral tradition in addressing ethical challenges in health care and biomedical research; and
The integral understanding of the human person underlying the teachings of the Catholic Church on respect for human life and dignity is better understood and more widely embraced in America and worldwide.
