Scrip Is Here!

The Finance Council is pleased to offer a different method of raising funds to support the operations of our Parish. It’s called “Scrip” and is a fundraising program that can provide the Parish with funds as our Parishioners shop. In short, every time you go to a participating retailer/vendor to buy food, fill the tank, purchase home improvement items or supplies, have a dinner out, buy a new outfit, etc. the participating retailer will be making a contribution to Saint Bernard. SCRIP is a great alternative means for increasing revenue for the parish while not increasing the financial burden to our Parishioners.

Scrip is simply a word that means “substitute money.” In other words, scrip is really gift/cash cards from national and local retailers. These are the same gift/cash cards that you can buy for these stores. Many popular retailers participate in the Scrip Program including JC Penney, The Gap, ShopRite, Shell, Pizza Hut, The Home Depot, Macys, etc.  Several hundred well known retailers participate in the program today and the list continues to grow.

You’re probably asking yourself how these stores help us raise money. It’s really very simple; Scrip participating retailers agree to sell their gift/cash certificates to our Parish at a discount. Parishioner families, like yours, purchase the gift/cash certificates for full face value and then redeem them at the store for full face value. Our Parish then keeps the difference as revenue.  And the best part of the Program is that everybody benefits:

  • The retailer gets cash up front and more importantly business
  • Our Parish families get a powerful fundraising alternative that involves no additional monetary contribution or selling
  • Our Parish receives a new regular source of income

As indicated earlier, the beauty of Scrip is that you can put your regular household shopping dollars to work for our Parish. You earn money for the Parish without spending a single additional penny than you do today. Just spend your regular shopping dollars using the Scrip gift/cash cards at the participating stores (or on-line). And again, Scrip can be used for just about any household purchase you can think of including food, clothing, entertainment, gasoline, dining out, and even massages.

General SCRIP Ordering Information:

Each week, SCRIP orders are submitted on Sunday. Don’t forget that cards ordered by noon on Sunday are generally available for pick-up starting the following Thursday. Order forms continue to be available in the Parish Office, at the Scrip Table in the Narthex after Masses, and on the parish web-site. Orders are accepted in the Parish Office during normal working hours or they can be placed in the Scrip Order Box after Weekend Masses. Also, see information below  regarding online ordering of your SCRIP cards. Please consider joining the growing number of parish households supporting the Scrip Program. There is no easier way to make a contribution to your parish than using Scrip for your routine purchases.

On-Line Ordering and Direct Pay Capabilities Available:

The capabilities to order your Scrip cards on-line as well as pay for your order via a withdrawal from your checking account are available to all Scrip Program participants. Feedback from current on-line users continues to be extremely positive, in  particular regarding the ease of setting up their on-line capability. To take advantage of this capability, simply send an email to Bernie McElroy ( and you will receive a response containing the complete set of instructions you will need to begin ordering online. Support will also be provided via email to assist you in getting up and running, if required. Naturally, our current process of taking paper orders will still be available for use.
